8th & I: Beyond the Spit and PolishInside the Walls of the Marine Corps’ Oldest PostWhat happens when the myth of the Marine Corps meets the brutal, unvarnished reality? From the humid halls, decks and pathways of pre-crucible Parris Island to the polished parade grounds and monuments of Washington, D.C., 8th & I: Beyond the Spit and Polish follows a young Marine as he discovers the truth behind the Corps’ most storied traditions. The immaculate uniforms, the snap-perfect drill, and the legendary discipline are only the surface. Beneath it lie fractured bones, punishing marches, sleepless nights, chaotic barracks life, and the often painful process of becoming—truly becoming—a Marine.Thrown into the intense world of 8th & I, the Corps’ oldest post, one finds himself navigating impossible standards, relentless NCOs, dysfunctional roommates, brutal training, moments of dark humor, and the kind of brotherhood forged only through shared misery and pride. Every day is a test. Every mistake has consequences. And every Marine must decide what kind of man he will be when no one is watching.Raw, gritty, darkly funny, and deeply human, this insider’s look at ceremonial Marines shines a light on the people behind the spit and polish—their fears, their failures, their victories, and their unbreakable will to endure. For anyone who has served, thought about serving, or ever wondered what really happens behind the gates, this is the story the commercials don’t tell and the recruiters will lie about.About the AuthorJason Morris served in the United States Marine Corps as a Machine Gunner and was assigned to the historic 8th & I marching platoons. During his time in the Marines, he also worked with the Marine Corps Institute and served as a member of the stage crew for the President’s Own U.S. Marine Band. After completing his Marine Corps service, Jason built a successful career as a Network Engineer and went on to deploy to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait with both the Florida and Illinois National Guard. He continues to serve today, having transitioned into Sustainment and Logistics with the Texas National Guard. The Author has a BS Degree in Applied Management and is working on an MBA with an emphasis in Project Management.
