The Via Alpina Sacra was a personal project realized between May 15 and September 16, 2018. The route covered 2,700 miles with enough elevation gain to hike half way up to the International Space Station. It followed the general idea of the Via Alpina network of paths which proposes five different routes through the Alps. The longest of these traverses all eight countries bordering on this European mountain range: Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France and Monaco. In its current iteration it is about 1,230 miles long. Why attempt to walk more than double the distance through these mountains? Because the Alps are not only an area of outstanding natural beauty, but also a unique cultural landscape. The Via Alpina Sacra sought to visit 200 of the largest, most beautiful, most interesting, oldest, highest, and most significant pilgrimage sites, churches, monasteries, shrines and sanctuaries of the Alps. This photo book was not conceived as a stand alone work but as a companion to the English translation of the travel diary titled „Via Alpina Sacra - The Longest Pilgrimage across the Alps“. These pages supplement the stories, descriptions and theological explanations found in that book with more than 450 photographs taken along the way. The particular choice of images therefore reflects the descriptions found in the other book, which is recommended for the full experience. Read more
